Eicosenoic acid is one of the metabolites produced from the degradation of fatty acids. Elevated levels of this fatty acid might indicate increased fatty acids catabolism, an alternative energy source in the brain when mitochondrial glycolytic energy generation is insufficient. Long-chain fatty acids are fatty acids with an aliphatic tail that contains between 13 and 21 carbonatoms. 11-Eicosenoic acid is practically insoluble (in water) and a weakly acidic compound. 11Z-Eicosenoic acid is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid found in a variety of plant oils. It is also found in the red cell membrane with increased concentrations in children with regressive autism.
