What is Malate?

Malate is involved in the citric acid cycle (aka. Krebs cycle). The citric acid cycle is a series of reactions that occur in the mitochondrion to generate chemical energy that fuels the metabolism. This cycle critically supports organ maintenance and neurological function.

High levels:

  • Higher levels of Malate in urine indicates inefficiencies in energy production.
  • Coenzyme Q10 deficiency causes elevation of this intermediate.

Low levels:

  • A deficiency in one or more Krebs’ cycle intermediates and an inhibition of normal energy production may cause a wide range of metabolic disturbances and symptoms.
  • Low levels can indicate a general amino acid insufficiency.
