5 Minutes with an Everyday Vegan: Alina Maria

How and why did you become vegan, Alina?

I basically became vegan overnight. I was a vegetarian ever since I was 8 years old and I always thought that vegans just eat salads, carrots and apples and nothing else. Everyone around me told me that I’m already a vegetarian and that it’s bad and unhealthy and [also] vegans are so weird, they only eat lettuce and that kind of stuff. I was not really thinking about it back then, because I was only 8 years old. I also didn’t really think where the milk was coming from. The milk is from a cow and it’s meant for a baby cow. I don’t drink the milk of my mom anymore, so why should I drink the milk of a cow? But I didn’t think like that back then. With the years I got older and I started to question everything a bit more and from one day to the other, just consuming animal products or products that consume animal-byproducts or that are tested on animals, I just did not want to consume them anymore and I just stopped. I thought it was really unhealthy, but I thought to myself: I don’t want to do the harm. I don’t care if I’m unhealthy or not, I just don’t want to do the harm. I started educated myself and I realized that veganism is so much about health. I also learned about the impact that veganism has on the planet and how positive it is.

What is the hardest argument you have to fight against people who do not share your Veganism views?

I don’t really fight back against someone. I never try to force my beliefs on anyone else. But what I think to myself is: if I can live two ways and one way is to feel perfectly fine and better than ever before while doing no harm to the planet, other people and to the animals and the other way is to just feel good, but not as good as I could, by harming others or others have to die for me just for my taste and for my entertainment, why should I choose do so? If I can live perfectly fine without harming anyone? That’s my belief, but I don’t really want to fight against anyone, because that’s just not what veganism is about. I want to inspire others by being a positive example!

What is your favourite “Quick-to-Fix” Vegan Snack?

That’s a hard one! That’s so hard to choose, but at the moment I’m really obsessed with dates, but I also like bread. I think I go with dates right now, but it really changes.

What is the perfect breakfast or first meal of the day?

In order to be perfect there has to be a certain outcome. Some people think that wearing a XS is perfect and others think that wearing an M is perfect, so the word ‘perfect’ differs from person to person. For me personally, the perfect breakfast is what makes me feel good in that present moment and most of the time it’s just a really water-rich fruit, or a smoothie or bananas or just something quick depending on what I’m doing. When it’s really cool outside it’s just something warming or bread. It really depends.

What is your favourite vegan place?

So, I’ve never been to a vegan place, because there are no such things where I live. Haha. People don’t even know what veganism means, sooo that’s how bad it is here. 🙂

What is your favourite vegan product?

My favorite vegan product besides food…that’s a hard one as well. But, if it’s not about food, I think it’s coconut oil for my skin, I love it! It’s food, but I don’t really use it as a food, maybe that counts.

Please share your favourite tips on vegan cooking

Cooking vegan does not essentially mean being difficult or complicated. It’s only as complicated as you make it and you can be vegan on the most basic and on the easiest things like rice, potatoes, bread, pasta, pizza, corn, curries…like all that kind of stuff that you are already eating, you can have vegan. I would not overcomplicate the whole process. I love cooking but I don’t really like fancy cooking. I like to just throw some pasta in the pot and some veggies with herbs and mix it all through. It just takes me 5 minutes to make that dish, but it’s really good. You can also just have some bread and spread it with hummus or avocado or jam or top it with fruits or veggies or vegan cheese or currie and you have a good meal.

Just look at easy dishes and don’t overcomplicate the whole process of cooking.

I’ll share with you my favorite smoothie.

  • 1/2 Liter of Coconut Water
  • 1/2 Liter of Water
  • 300g of dried Medjool Dates
  • Cinnamon
  • Peanut Butter
  • A bit of Almond milk

I mix it for 60 seconds in my high speed blender and it’s the best thing ever.

Do you take any supplements?

I do not take supplements, I never have. I’m a vegan for 2 years now and I have been vegetarian before for 8 years. I do not like Vitamin B12 or anything else. I’ve done blood tests several times. Ever before I went vegan I was suffering from iron deficiency, I took supplements and pills against it but nothing helped. I also did not have my period and now I have my period. Regularly. I did not have it regularly before. I’m not deficient in Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, vitamin whatever. I’m not deficient in anything.
