What are ‘Platelets’?

Although they make up only a small portion of the blood, platelets are indispensable to your health. Their main function is to stop bleeding by swelling, clumping together, and forming sticky plug, or clot. Platelets also transport other blood components, including inflammatory compounds called cytokines, as well as neurotransmitters, or brain chemicals. Approximately 2 % of the neurotransmitter serotonin, a vital chemical that acts as a mood enhancer, is contained in the platelets.
